Middletown Historical Society properties are now open for tours!

Boyd's Wind Grist Mill is one of only a handful of 8-bladed windmills remaining in the United states and was moved to its present location and lovingly restored by the Society in 2000. This is an actual, working wind grist mill and is not a replica. All of its components were restored and where necessary, fabricated using the same 19th century materials as the original.

Witherbee School is an actual one-room schoolhouse and is set up just as it was when it was in use. In addition, Ken Walsh, the founder of the Middletown Historical Society, has created a Revolutionary War exhibit that provides interesting information on Middletown's role in the American Revolution as well as the Battle of Rhode Island including fortifications, both Colonial and British that are located within a short distance from Witherbee School.

There is no entrance charge for either of these exhibits however donations are gladly accepted.

If you are interested in joining or supporting the Middletown Historical Society or if you would be interested in becoming a docent, please contact us at info@middletownhistory.org or by telephone at (401) 849-1870.

If you are navigating using GPS, Boyd's Windmill is located at N41 30.110, W071 16.098; Witherbee School is located at N41 30.367, W071 17.340.

We are hoping to increase the number of Corporate Memberships in the Historical Society. Corporate members will receive an assortment of benefits including recognition of their support in our newsletters and on our website. If you own a local business or if you know someone who does, please consider signing up for a corporate membership. Remember, MHS contributions may be tax deductible.

Please consider donating some of your time to Society programs. We always have need of help with many of our activities. More helping hands equates to more projects which fosters an increased appreciation for the history of Middletown and Aquidneck Island.

Some of our projects for the upcoming year:

  • Development of our newest property located at the corner of Valley and East Main Roads. Current plans are to develop this land as a park dedicated to Middletown's contribution to the Revolutionary War.

  • Painting and renovations to Witherbee School.

  • Working with the town on the expansion of Paradise Park.

  • Training a team of operators who will run the windmill during the summer months.

  • Additional video presentations on Cox Cable Public Access Channel 18.

If you would like to help out with any of these projects, please come to one of our Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are generally held on the second Thursday of each month at 5:30pm at Paradise School. Drop us an email and we'll send you an agenda for the next meeting.

Thanks for your time!
